Of Cupcakes and Skulls | Part 1
(A/N) Aaaaaahhhh, I loved the prompt by @lunamoonbby and I'm so glad they allowed me to write a whole fic about it. Will probably write a second part because this is just too cute!
Pairing: single dad! Mafia! Simon x baker! Reader
Warning: lots of fluff
Synopsis: Based on this post by @lunamoonbby
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8 | Part 9
A deep sigh escaped your lips when the door closed behind the last customer. It had been a long and tiring day, your legs had started hurting five hours ago, and all you wanted to do was finish closing the bakery and head home. But there was a lot to do before you could, so you put on some music and got started.
Quietly singing along, you disappeared into the kitchen, where you portioned the cupcake dough you had made earlier into the baking trays and slid them into the oven, setting a time on your phone before you started cleaning. As quickly as possible, you washed all the bowls, whiskers, and anything else that had gotten dirty that day, the thought of your bed ever present in your mind. Once you were done with that, you quickly vacuumed the floor and were about to wipe it, when a familiar sound stopped you.
The bell that hung above the door to the bakery rang out and you cursed at yourself. Had you really forgotten to lock the door after the last customer left? With another sigh, you walked into the salesroom, an annoyed ‘We’re closed’ almost leaving your lips before your eyes fell onto the little girl who had walked in. Her eyes were big and round, shining with unshed tears while her lips trembled.
“Oh dear, are you okay?”
You rushed to her side and knelt down in front of her, reaching out to gently grasp her shoulder.
“I…I l-lost da-daddy.”
She squeezed her eyes shut as the tears began to stream down her cheeks, her little shoulders shaking with every hiccup as she tried to suppress the sobs. Without thinking, you pulled her into a hug, her little fingers immediately curling into the fabric of the shirt you were wearing.
You stayed like that, hugging the little girl until she calmed down a bit, her body still shaking with hiccups. But you pulled away, gently swiping the tears away, as you gave her a reassuring smile.
“It’s going to be okay, we’ll find your daddy, yeah?”
She nodded, though she didn’t seem too confident. Convincing her would take some work.
“Okay, let’s start with your name, hm? Can you tell me that?”
“Mi-Millie.”
Your smile pulled into a grin, that you hoped looked proud.
“Great! Now, what’s your daddy called?”
Millie looked at you, confused.
“Daddy.”
You should’ve expected that answer. After all, she looked to be about four. What four-year-old knew their parent’s actual name?
“Oki dok. Do you know any way I can reach him? His phone number?”
She shook her head, a pout forming on her lips as she glanced at the floor. You hesitated for a second, but you didn’t know what else to do.
“Okay, let me just grab my coat and we’ll go to the police station nearby. I’m sure he would go there to look for you.”
But before you could rise to your feet, Millie reached out and stopped you, a panicked look on her face.
“No! We…We can’t go to the police. They don’t like daddy.”
Her statement confused you, but with the way she looked at you, you couldn’t force her to go either. While you were contemplating what to do, the timer on your phone went off and you got an idea to at least keep her busy until you came up with something. With a smirk, you looked at her.
“Do you like cupcakes?”
Millie looked confused but nodded. You rose to your feet and held out your hand, offering it to her.
“Want to decorate some while we wait for your daddy? You can even decorate one for him.”
A bright smile spread across her lips and you couldn’t help but fall in love with it. She nodded full of enthusiasm, her worries gone for at least the moment. So, after helping her out of her jacket and with her hand in yours, you led her to the kitchen and sat her down on the counter. You were just glad that the kitchen had a window front to the street. That way, if her father came along, he would be able to see her inside.
“Wait here for me, okay?”
She nodded and watched as you carefully pulled the hot trays out of the oven and placed them on a counter, far away from the little girl. You then checked the fridge, to see if there was any buttercream left, but there wasn’t. So you grabbed all the ingredients and walked back to Millie.
“Do you want to help me make some buttercream? We can even color it.”
Her eyes lit up and she nodded vigorously. After you put an oversized apron on her, you showed her a simple buttercream recipe, Millie snacking on it the whole time while you made it. Once it was done, you portioned it into different small bowls.
“What colors do you want?”
“Pink! And purple and blue and green and also yellow.”
You chuckled and nodded, pulling the needed food colors from a shelve. As you slowly placed them with the bowls, Millie reached up and tugged on your sleeve.
“Can we also make some black? Daddy really likes black.”
You again nodded and retrieved the last color. Together, you colored the buttercream, Millie whisking away at the pink one, while you quickly finished the other colors. Once you were both happy, you showed Millie how to put all the different colors she chose into the same pipe, so that it would be a colorful swirl when put onto a cupcake. She watched, her eyes wide and sparkling as if you were showing her how to create magic dust.
Once the cupcakes had cooled enough, you brought three over, one for each of you and one for her dad. While you carefully guided her hands, showing her how to use the pipe, you watched her as she poked her tongue out in concentration. A soft smile spread on your lips as adoration for the little kid overcame you.
Once all three cupcakes had buttercream on them, it was time for sprinkles. Millie of course wanted a lot of sparkles, hearts, and bows. While she was busy combing through the different sprinkle containers you had, you retrieved a large chocolate heart from the fridge. You used it to decorate cakes, but you thought Millie would love it. But for the moment, you decided to hide it, only wanting to reveal it when they were done.
“Did you find something you like?”
Millie nodded, while still looking through the containers.
“Do you have skulls?”
It took you a moment to realize that she was still talking about sprinkles. Once you overcame that initial shock, you nodded and retrieved another box, the one you kept the seasonal sprinkles in. You handed the little girl a container filled with small skulls, pumpkins, and spiders and she smiled.
“Daddy really likes skulls.”
You smiled as you stored that information. Black and skulls and not on good terms with the police. Sounds dangerous.
For the next few minutes, you decorated the cupcakes. For your own, you decided to go with your favorite sprinkles and a bit of glitter. Millie truly overdid her own and her father’s cupcake, but you couldn’t help but smile as you watched her concentrate, trying to find a free spot where one more skull sprinkle would fit.
Just as she found the spot and pressed the white form into the buttercream, the bell above the door rang out again and you could hear fast footsteps approaching. Both you and Millie turned to look toward the door and you couldn’t help but step in front of the little girl, shielding her body with yours. But then you heard it.
“Millie!”
A large man burst through the door, wild eyes finding yours before they jumped to the girl behind you.
“Daddy!”
With a relieved sigh, he fell to his knees, opening his arms as his little girl bolted toward him, almost stumbling over the apron on her way. She crashed into his chest, wrapping her short, little arms around his neck as best as she could. A soft smile tugged on your lips as you watched the duo. His brows were furrowed, but not in an angry way. No, he looked scared and desperate, but at the same time so very relieved.
Not picking up on her dad’s whirlwind of emotion, Millie immediately began talking, telling him all about the cupcakes. The man glanced up at you as his daughter pulled out of his hug and rushed back to the counter. As soon as your eyes met his, you felt a shiver run through you. You couldn’t explain it, but the way he looked at you felt…intimate.
“Daddy! Daddy! Look what we made.”
Millie quickly had his attention again, as the man joined her at the counter, his eyes landing on the cupcakes.
“We made them. There is one for me. And one for you. And one for her!”
He smiled - good god did he look stunning when he smiled - as he watched Millie point out all the details.
“Well done, munchkin. Why don’t you finish up so we can go home, hm?”
Millie nodded, not reacting when he pressed a gentle kiss to the crown of her head before he turned to you. Oozing confidence, he took a few steps toward you, only stopping once he was close enough that you could smell his cologne. Another shiver ran through you at the proximity, as you had to crane your neck to meet his eyes.
“I’m Simon. Thank you for…well, for taking care of her.”
You smiled, and for a moment Simon stopped breathing. The moment he spotted you through the window front he knew you were beautiful, but smiling up at him, you were just stunning, his fingers itching to reach out and feel you against him.
“It was a pleasure.”
Your eyes left his and landed on Millie as she poured more sprinkles onto her cupcake.
“She is amazing. Told me not to go to the police, because they don’t like you.”
You chuckled, expecting him to do the same, but he avoided your eyes as a light blush dusted his cheeks.
“She’s not wrong there. I-”
He was interrupted by Millie calling for him. And with an apologetic smile, he joined her at the counter. While the two were busy, you decided to quickly clean whatever you could, the rest you would do the next morning. Once you were done, you grabbed a box and the heart you had hidden, before walking up to the pair. Millie was showing Simon how you had put all the different colors into the piping bag, as he reacted with ‘ohs’ and ahs’ at exactly the right moments. You smiled as you watched, quickly catching Simon’s attention, as he glanced at you with a crooked grin.
“Millie?”
The little girl stopped and looked up at her dad, who gently motioned toward you. As soon as she saw the heart you were holding on a napkin, she started bouncing with excitement. Carefully, you handed it to her and watched as she stuck it into the buttercream on her cupcake, a big grin on her face.
After a few moments of her admiring it, you convinced her to let you box up the cupcakes, so she could leave with her father. While you did that, Simon carried his daughter to the sink, where he helped her wash her hands, before he dried them for her. With the box, you met them in the salesroom, where Simon was helping his daughter into her jacket. You knelt down and carefully handed the box to her.
“Don’t drop it, okay?”
She nodded and grinned, watching as you rose back to your feet. Simon was standing beside her, his wallet in his hands. Before he could say anything, you shook your head.
“No, it’s fine, really.”
“But-”
“I insist. It was a pleasure to spend time with your daughter.”
He smiled, and before you could protest, he shoved a few notes into the tip jar on the counter. You inhaled, ready to protest, but when you looked at him, you knew that it was futile, so you smiled, feeling your cheeks heat up.
“Thank you.”
The intensity of his gaze was too much, and you quickly found yourself glancing at the floor, jumping slightly as you felt his lips press to your temple.
“Thank you for taking care of her.”
He pulled back and you glanced up. Simon easily picked Millie up, before bidding you goodbye and walking out of your bakery. Millie waved at you the whole time until they were out of sight. A soft smile spread across your lips, as you turned towards the corner, curiously pulling out the tip Simon had left you. But when you counted the bills, you couldn’t believe it. You counted them three more times, before accepting the fact that he had left you $300.
But what caught your attention even more, was a black business card in the middle of the folded notes.
Simon Riley.
Simon.
Riley.
Riley.
Riley.
Riley!
A gasp left your mouth as you realized who you had just dealt with. Simon Riley, the local mafia boss, feared by everyone, hunted by the police. No wonder Millie didn’t want you to go to the police. As you continued to stare at the card, a shiver ran through you, wondering if you’d see the mafia boss again.

AN ~ short bucktommy angst/whump with a happy ending, coz i love torturing my boys. 8x07 spoilers and verrrrrry loosely insp by a still from 8x08
typing
Why would he type type type and not send anything?
The alarms blare and Buck throws his baking back in the oven and sprints downstairs, but his mind is elsewhere. This? This is all muscle memory at this point. His mind occupies itself with other things, wondering what exactly Tommy might have wanted to say.
Evan. No. Buck. God, he still hates it that he called him Buck.
Can we talk? Tommy always was a man of few words. Or maybe Buck is just a man of many. But what does 'can we talk' even mean? He'd be spiralling just as hard as with the silent disappearing bubble. It's better this way.
MARRIAGE, EVAN??
God, he's an idiot. A pathetic, clingy idiot. Even now he would kill for a second round, just to dig that knife in deeper. At least then maybe, he'd be able to pick up what he'd missed before; where exactly that big dimpled grin and soft eyes had turned to hard words and hidden pain. At least then, he'd be able to fix it.
Hen watches him with a knowing eye.
“Stay strong, Buck,” she reminds him as they pull up to the scene. “Head in the game.”
Buck nods. He drops his phone on the seat and packs it away to the back of his mind, as best he can. Maybe he'll get to whip out the jaws of life. They always make him feel better. Shake it off, Buckley, let's go.
He's the last one out of the engine, and he hits the ground already triaging the scene. His senses expand, cataloguing the vehicles, the passers-by, the direction and nature of the accident. Eddie and Bobby are getting a run-down from a uniformed police officer on scene and it happens a splt second before Buck's mind catches up.
“A silver-” he overhears - “oh-”
He can see it in his minds eye, almost feel it even as his own heart sinks; the way recognition sets into Eddie's face. And then horror. He looks further down the road, to a sight that's partially obstructed from Buck's view. Partially, but not so much that he doesn't start running toward it because he has a feeling he knows, he knows, he knows who it is.
Why would he type type type and not send anything?
“Buck-” Hen warns, reaching to grab him but she's already missed.
Buck knows he should be helping but his world is caving in. Bobby's barking commands but all he hears is a wordless echo. Ravi hustles the balloons and the jaws up to the worst hit of the vehicles and Chimney is already there; medkit tossed over the worst of the shattered glass as he kneels by the dangerously crushed window and tries to make contact with the person inside.
“Buck.” It's Eddie this time, blocking with his body as much as he can – and he can, even with the full force of Buck throwing himself forward - but even he can't stop the terrible, terrible knowing.
“TOMMY!”
The name rips out of his lungs, because it's the truck: it's Tommy's pride and joy. It's singing along in the passenger seat and Tommy's smiling – sometimes he joins in, even though he wouldn't otherwise care for Buck's taste. It's Tommy slinging a greasy towel over his shoulder and hitching himinto the truck bed and making out until they both can't breathe. It's spilling the salt from hot chips in there; it's shoulder to shoulder at the drive-ins; it's getting fucked into the seats; it's polishing and vacuuming just last week because he can't help with the engine for shit. He'd put a little thing of jellybeans in the cup holder after - like his old detailer used to do, just to be cute - and it hits him that that's what those little coloured smudges are, intermingled with the crushed glass littered across the road.
What if he's in trouble and he needs my help?
“Oh, God, Tommy.”
The howling turns to hopeless. Breathless. The fight evaporates right out of him and he collapses forward into Eddie's arms. Eddie's embrace is firm and steadying as he lowers them both as gently as he can manage to the curb. Buck closes his eyes, sapped of the strength to watch any more but cursed by the knowledge of what's still got to be happening. Hen and Chim will be extracting Tommy's bruised and broken body onto a backboard right about now, and then lifting him onto a gurney. They'll be doing CPR if he's lucky – and they are, he can hear it, so at least there's that.
Then it stops.
For a few, horrible seconds all he can hear is his own hammering heart. Eddie's ragged breathing. Footsteps. Bobby.
“Buck.”
It takes a second, for him to gather the courage to open his eyes and look up. Bobby's demeanour is solemn and serious, but there's a softness Buck recognises well. A lightness that promises things might just be okay, as he offers a hand to pull Buck up from the roadside.
“He's asking for you in the ambulance,” Bobby says, and there's just a flicker, just an iota of a smile as he urges - “Go.”

I don't want to put anyone in the notes on the print/steal a replacement knob for an oven post on blast but nope. wrong. printer beam attack.
also wrong, but with more qualifiers. Taking a peek at the local hardware store, a low end stove is in the $800s on sale. A good medium-high quality 3D printer is also in the $800s. A cheapshit 3D printer can be had for $200. So you can do the math on that one.
But to discuss a 3D printer paying for itself in home repairs, that's actually pretty easy.
I got a 3D printer for about $800 in 2018. In the last two years, for home repairs, improvements, and quality of life, I've printed about:
30 custom color matched brackets for a lighting system, none of which could be purchased. To approximate it, you'd need to buy all of the pieces and then modify them using sandpaper, primer, and paint and just the materials to modify the pieces would run you about $30 and 2-3 days of work.
Nail guides for installing a pocket door, not a purchasable item
12 fancy shelf brackets for the bathroom closet, $10+ per piece
36 basic shelf brackets for the basement storage racks, $5+ per piece
various glue and cut guides
cover for drier exhaust tube hole
4 brackets for curtain to cover unwanted mirror, can't be bought
6 custom brackets for curtains over main windows, can't be bought
2 windowsill cleats to tie off the curtain pulls, $5+ each
3 bends for the hand rail replacement project, $60+ each
blast gates for dust collection system for power tools in the basement, $30 per gate
30 clips for the gallery hanging system to work with my cheapass frames, the clips that don't work are $2+ a piece
plumbing pieces for the wet/dry vacuum, can't be bought
plumbing pieces for the rain collection system, can't be bought, similar parts $15/piece
various small boxes and organizers, $5-30 piece
tabs to secure forces air register covers to the wall, $0.50/piece but they'd look like shit
and some stuff I'm forgetting
Not counting the things that couldn't be bought, gas to run to the store, shipping costs, or the money my time is worth and using the minimum estimates, that list totals $1017. Estimating the uncountables, I guess that I've gotten upwards of $2000 of value from the printer.
Materials cost, not counting the printer:
about two hours per model (average, some take like 10 minutes) to create the model, total 32 hours. At $20/hr for my time, that's $640.
about two hours per print run (average, some take a few minutes, others take 6 hours).
electricity for the computer to model and the printer to run. Given that heating and cooling and cooking in this house is all electric, I consider this round off to the total costs of operating the house.
filament to feed the printer: three reels at $30/reel (estimated) = $90
That totals about $730 of costs to operate the printer.
Subtracting operating costs from obtained value, I get $1270. So in two years, the printer has well and thoroughly paid for itself and left $400+ in my pocket.
And the convenience of having parts made exactly the way I want them, the first time, with limited modifications, almost zero waste, and almost instantly is truly a lifesaver. I cannot overstate how much better that has made my life. I can start work on something, realize I need a part, and have the part ready to go by the time the work gets to where the part is needed. And I live super close to the store; it would be even more valuable to me if I lived further from the store.
and for funsies I've also printed:
hand wheel for antique sewing machine. If you can buy the parts, it'll run you over $1000.
Spinning wheel. IDK $300-$3000.
cute watering can for my plants. Can't buy it but equivalent would be $30-50.
and more!
I joke about the 3D printer being my most valuable tool but it really is. Many, most even, of my most annoying problems can be solved with it.
#While I'm having unwanted opinions on the internet#3D printing#Ill advised posts#$400 ain't much but it ain't nothing that's for sure#And it's been fun to run the numbers#So much stuff I couldn't have or do without the printer#And I really don't make novelties and toys#This is a utility printer for solving problems

One Shot, One Kill
Nobody on Earth saw it—but then again, that was the point. If humanity’s telescopes had somehow been given advance warning, they would’ve seen a brief gamma flash in the constellation of Draco—a lit match against the interstellar background, a minor course correction which flared for a few seconds before dissipating. Other than that, the intruder streaking towards the Sun left no trail. Its anti-hydrogen tanks were empty, the magnetic coil of its main engine had lain dormant for decades and its electromagnetic emissions were nothing but ghosts of ghosts. As the craft barrelled from interstellar space into the far reaches of the Solar System, the volume of dust particles increased, ionising harmlessly against the craft’s immense shields. There wasn’t a force in the universe that could dissuade it from its chosen path. It had no way of slowing down, but that wasn’t the intruder’s concern. It wasn’t going home again.
Five light-weeks from Earth, still deep in the recesses of the Oort Cloud, the intruder’s payload broke into two halves. Another gamma flare pricked at the stars as the trailing half slowed its approach by an imperceptible amount—just enough to delay interception of its target by a few hours.
Deep in the gravity well of the Solar System, the intruder’s nine billion targets continued sleeping and waking, dreaming and planning, fighting and loving, heedless of the relativistic crosshairs painted squarely on each of their heads.
** Just a few scant seconds from arrival, the leading half of the intruder’s payload burst apart, revealing a field of eight hundred flechettes. These ‘flechettes’ were nothing more than inert bullets of metal, each weighing fifteen tons and small enough to fit within the typical living room. Traveling at 91.37 percent of light-speed, each fragment carried the explosive power of the world’s nuclear arsenals more than three hundred times over. A smattering of the projectiles were diverted to impact the scattered bases on the far side of Earth’s moon. For the briefest fraction of a second, the Moon was outlined in fire: the corona of a second sun, born in the daytime skies of Earth.
Just over a second after lunar impact, the first of the relativistic flechette-bombs entered Earth’s atmosphere, forty miles off the eastern coast of Indonesia. Earth’s atmosphere produced no resistance. It would’ve been like trying to swat back a nuclear missile with a napkin.
An intense spear of light descended through the air, clearing a tunnel of near-vacuum density through which the flechette plummeted. Thirty kilometers above the waters of the Indian Ocean, the air pressure became too much—the flechette dropped another couple of halting kilometers before detonating in a flash of searing blue light, so bright that its ferocious glare wiped away every shadow in Southeast Asia. The entire eastern hemisphere of the Earth was frozen in eerie blue light, the first frame of a grisly slide. Before the human optic nerve could even react, everything in the Indonesian archipelago—every skyscraper, car, sidewalk, apartment block and beachgoer—was instantly liquefied. The skyline of Jakarta began to slip like a melting oil painting, but before it dropped half a meter, it was blasted to disparate atoms, leaving nothing but carbonized streaks across burning soil.
More than seven hundred of its sister flechettes pierced the sky in unison. Millions of square miles of ocean began to steam. From Shanghai to Sydney, from Addis Ababa to Auckland, the side of the planet facing the onslaught was now a giant microwave oven. Six billion people were boiled to vapour in the blink of an eye.
By the time the second round of projectiles reached the Earth eight hours later, every free-standing structure on the planet's surface was already burning.

Bracket 2 Round 2 Poll 1
Alucard & Ezekiel vs Summer
second post with propaganda (alucard and summer)
ALUCARD
he's orange, steals food if you're too slow to protect it, and he is full of love for his mommy and his mommy alone. alucard also loves to sing and feels like he's full of pudding.
PROPAGANDA
ALUCARD PROPAGANDA !!!
blep ^
behold my son............
more alu propaganda and fun facts!
he once ate his way through an entire pizza box solely to eat the cheese off of it! he has also ripped into a bag of doritos and cereal solely because he is a gremlin. we cant have ANY food outside of a bin or cabinet or he will find it and eat it. he can also open doors ???
he has two favorite places to sleep! one is that crappy basket on the right that i wove for a college class. the other is a cardboard house that his butt has nearly ripped in half!
despite being the younger brother, he's the more dominant one! he tries act like hes all tough when it comes to simon but its a hard facade to keep up when he keeps play-tackling alucard! they still love each other though; hence the spooning. it always makes us happy when they sleep together <3
whenever my fiance leaves the bed, alucard immediately gets up and runs to his spot. it feels like hes always just waiting for him to get up so he can come and spoon me
these photos are also making me consider if hes a shapeshifter because why does he look different in every picture
alucard is also a WORLD CLASS WRESTLER . he may be on the ground, but he knows exactly what hes doing. i dont think him and simon should be in the same weight class though 😳
these pictures are mostly just funny to me. whenever we're watching tv and he wants attention, he sits on top of our fLAT SCREEN TV??? he does this all the time and i ??? i dont know why
he also does pull-ups on the oven door apparently. it was off and nothing was hot; he just wanted the food smh.
EZEKIEL
His birthday is April Fools Day and that could not be more fitting. Despite being a little old man at 12 (almost 13!) years of age, he’s still very playful, energetic and affectionate. He regularly wakes submitter up because he wants cuddles. He also likes to play fetch and steal salty snacks.
PROPAGANDA
Propaganda for my baby boy, Ezekiel (he is not a baby, he is 13)
The last photo is from one of the many times he’s climbed between the couch and the wall so he can jump up and scare my brother
He’s a very good boy who comforts me during anxiety attacks. My family and I call him Ezie for short and he isn’t afraid of anything, be it fireworks, thunderstorms or vacuum cleaners. Other nicknames include “stinky old man,”“sneezy,” and “cheese weasel.” Because he also likes to steal cheese. He will take it right off your sandwich.
SUMMER
She’s a Siberian, and she’s submitter's emotional support animal she’s such a good baby and they would kill for her! She has a whole host of chronic health issues but she’s handling it like a trooper. Beloved by all friends family and vet staff she deserves the world!!
PROPAGANA
propaganda post 2
#polls#cat#cats#catfight two#catfight two round two#fun fact i've hit the image limit#if they all tie too i'll have to start doing separate propaganda sequel posts and linking them there#actually no i have to do that NOW#okay did that#holy shit

Before we get to the geopolitics, can we have a moment to inhabit the technological sublime? Microchips are some of the most extraordinary objects humanity has ever made. Miller has a good illustration of this: the coronavirus is tiny, about a hundred billionths of a metre across, but it is a galumphing heifer of a beast compared to the smallest transistors being made in Fab 18, which are half that size. TSMC is now talking about transistor nodes in terms of three billionths of a metre. This is so small that quantum effects, which happen mostly at the subatomic level, become relevant.
The machinery needed to manufacture these extraordinarily delicate artefacts has got bigger and more complicated as the microchips have shrunk in size and increased in power. The silicon is etched onto the chips with a new technique called extreme ultraviolet lithography. Think of a microscope, which makes small things big. Now turn it round, so that the lens is making big things small. And now use that process to take a super-complex design and etch it onto an infinitesimally small microchip. That is lithography, which has been the basis of microchip manufacture ever since Jay Lathrop at TI invented it in 1958. But as the chips have got smaller, the lithography process has got more and more difficult.
At the far limit of the technology is the Dutch company ASML, the only firm in the world to have mastered EUV lithography. This process involves the production of EUV light, which in turn involves
“a tiny ball of tin measuring thirty millionths of a metre moving through a vacuum at a speed of around two hundred miles per hour. The tin is then struck twice with a laser, the first pulse to warm it up, the second to blast it into a plasma with a temperature around half a million degrees, many times hotter than the surface of the sun. This process of blasting tin is then repeated fifty thousand times per second to produce EUV light in the quantities necessary to fabricate chips.”
The company that learned how to do this is an American firm called Cymer. Their process depended on a laser so powerful it produced too much heat unless it could be cooled with fans; but the fans ran so fast they burned out their bearings; so engineers invented a process for holding the fans in mid-air, suspended by magnets. The company that invented the new laser is a German firm distractingly called Trumpf. Its development took a decade. Each laser consists of 457,329 parts. The next stage in EUV was the manufacture of a new kind of mirror, made by the German company Zeiss, the smoothest mirror ever made: if it was the same size as Germany, its smallest irregularity would be 0.1 millimetre. But the most complicated laser ever made and the smoothest mirror ever made are just two components of ASML’s lithography device. Look back over that chain: the Taiwanese company (TSMC) commissions the Dutch company (ASML) which commissions the US company (Cymer) which commissions the German company (Trumpf) and also the other German company (Zeiss). It is no wonder that ASML’s latest EUV device is ‘the most expensive mass-produced machine tool in history’.
At this point, the technological sublime and geopolitics merge. Chips are ubiquitous, but top-end chips are not: they are the product of a highly concentrated manufacturing process in which a tiny number of companies constitute an impassable global choke point. If you can’t work with ASML, you can’t make a high-end chip. If you can’t get your top-of-the-range chip made by TSMC, Samsung or Intel, there’s no point designing it, because nobody else can manufacture it.

Seasonal Cleaning Tips for Homes in Zephyrhills, FL
Zephyrhills, Florida, is known for its warm climate, seasonal rains, and beautiful surroundings. However, the changing seasons can bring unique challenges to maintaining a clean and comfortable home. By following these seasonal cleaning tips, you can ensure your home stays fresh, organized, and welcoming year-round.
Spring Cleaning: Refresh and Renew
Spring is the perfect time to tackle deep cleaning and decluttering tasks. The warmer weather and longer days make it easier to air out your home and tackle those neglected corners. Here are some tips:
Declutter and Organize: Go room by room to get rid of items you no longer need. Donate, recycle, or discard items to create more space.
Wash Windows and Screens: Remove dirt and pollen buildup from windows and screens to let in more light and fresh air.
Deep Clean Carpets and Upholstery: Hire a professional or rent a carpet cleaner to remove accumulated dust, allergens, and stains.
Check for Mold and Mildew: Florida’s humidity makes homes prone to mold. Inspect bathrooms, basements, and air conditioning units for any signs of growth.
Clean Outdoor Areas: Sweep patios, clean outdoor furniture, and pressure-wash driveways and walkways to prepare for spring gatherings.
Summer Cleaning: Combat Heat and Humidity
Florida summers bring high temperatures and humidity, which can lead to extra dirt and grime. Focus on these areas to keep your home cool and clean:
Maintain Your HVAC System: Clean or replace air filters regularly to improve air quality and efficiency.
Dust Ceiling Fans and Light Fixtures: Dust buildup can circulate allergens and make your home feel less fresh.
Keep Kitchens Cool and Clean: Wipe down appliances, especially refrigerators and freezers, to ensure they’re running efficiently during the heat.
Address Pest Prevention: Seal cracks and clean food storage areas to prevent infestations common during summer months.
Refresh Linens: Switch to lightweight, breathable fabrics for bedding and curtains to help your home stay cooler.
Fall Cleaning: Prepare for Cooler Weather
Although fall in Zephyrhills is milder than other parts of the country, it’s still a great time to prepare your home for the upcoming holiday season.
Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Remove leaves and debris to prevent clogs and ensure proper drainage.
Polish Wood Furniture and Floors: Fall is a great time to restore shine to hardwood surfaces and protect them from wear.
Organize Storage Areas: Tidy up closets, garages, and storage units to make room for holiday decorations.
Wash Exterior Windows: Remove summer grime and streaks to improve visibility and curb appeal.
Service Appliances: Clean ovens, stovetops, and dishwashers to prepare for increased holiday cooking.
Winter Cleaning: Keep Cozy and Hygienic
While winters in Zephyrhills are mild, they can still bring cooler temperatures and a desire to create a cozy indoor atmosphere. Focus on these tasks:
Dust and Vacuum Thoroughly: Pay extra attention to baseboards, corners, and under furniture to remove hidden dust.
Sanitize High-Touch Areas: Wipe down doorknobs, light switches, and remote controls to reduce germs.
Deep Clean Bathrooms: Scrub tiles, grout, and showerheads to combat the effects of humidity and frequent use.
Check for Drafts: Inspect windows and doors for gaps to keep your home energy-efficient during cooler weather.
Prepare for Guests: Freshen up guest bedrooms and common areas for holiday visitors.
Year-Round Maintenance Tips
No matter the season, these maintenance tips will help keep your Zephyrhills home in top shape:
Invest in Professional Cleaning Services: Regular visits from a professional cleaning service can save you time and ensure your home stays spotless.
Control Humidity Levels: Use dehumidifiers and maintain proper ventilation to reduce mold and mildew risks.
Schedule Regular Pest Control: Florida’s climate makes pest prevention an ongoing necessity.
Stock Up on Cleaning Supplies: Keep eco-friendly cleaning products on hand for quick touch-ups between deep cleans.
By tailoring your cleaning routine to the unique needs of each season, you can enjoy a clean, comfortable home throughout the year. Whether you handle it yourself or hire professional cleaners, staying on top of seasonal cleaning will enhance your home’s beauty and functionality. Start today and see the difference it makes!

Seasonal Deep Cleaning: Tips for Refreshing Your Home Year-Round
What is Seasonal Deep Cleaning?
Seasonal deep cleaning involves thoroughly cleaning your home at various times throughout the year. Unlike regular cleaning, which may focus on surface areas, deep cleaning digs deeper into nooks and crannies that often get overlooked. Think about it—when was the last time you cleaned behind your refrigerator or scrubbed down your baseboards? Seasonal deep cleaning ensures that these tasks don’t fall by the wayside.

Spring Cleaning To-Do List
Whether you live in an apartment, house or condo, spring cleaning is a necessary chore. Use this catch-all checklist to ensure that every area is disinfected, tidied and freshened up for springtime!
Choose a cloudy day to wash windows to prevent streaks. Clean curtains and window sills. Wash baseboards and molding and touch-up paint where needed.
Kitchen
Your kitchen is one of the most-used areas in your home. It’s the hub of everything from meal prep and family dinners to after-school homework sessions and weekend craft projects. This area can get cluttered and messy fast, so it requires more regular deep cleaning than other spaces.
Begin with a clean slate by emptying trash cans and recycling bins. Sort through items you no longer use and donate or consign them. Empty drawers and cabinets, toss any expired food or drinks, and wipe down surfaces.
Next, clean appliances like your oven and dishwasher. Remove and wash cabinet doors and drawers, wipe down the sink, and clean your refrigerator and freezer
(defrost and sanitize if necessary). Finally, sweep and mop the floors. Don’t forget to dust doorknobs, outlet covers, and light switches. This is also a great time to change out filters and replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Bathroom
A clean bathroom is important for health and hygiene. Smelly bathrooms can affect the entire house, and air fresheners can only mask the problem for so long.
Start by emptying the cabinets and drawers. Wash all the drawer contents, then organize and put items back in neatly. Organize and wipe down the cabinet shelves and the inside of the pantry and refrigerator, too.
Sliding door tracks and frames are often overlooked in cleaning, but they can get dirty quickly with a buildup of grime and moisture. Smaller dirt and dust particles can also become lodged in these spaces, which can cause the doors to stick.
Adding daily maintenance tasks can help you maintain your home between deep cleanings, says Rubino. For example, every time you use your shower, squeegee the walls and mirror to remove soap scum. Similarly, vacuum the floors regularly, and clean rugs and bathmats. This way, you can prevent mold and mildew growth and keep your family healthy and happy.
Living Room
The living room is the hub of your home’s social life and often the most-used space. It is also the room most likely to contain clutter, from kids’ art projects and school book bags to pet toys and remote controls. Start by decluttering and putting things away where they belong.
Once the space is clear, vacuum or sweep floors and dust the surfaces of the room. This may include removing curtains or drapes and following care instructions to clean them (or simply washing), dusting picture frames, mirrors, lamps, and window sills, and wiping down trim and baseboards.
If you have a long-handled duster or vacuum attachment, reach up to wipe down the ceiling and remove cobwebs. Finally, check and change the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Keeping your living space tidy and clutter-free not only makes the family feel happier, it helps maintain a healthy indoor environment. The key is to develop a cleaning routine, not just for spring cleaning but year-round.
Dining Room
The dining room is where family members gather for meals and dinner parties. It’s important to make sure the area is clean and hygienic to prevent the spread of bacteria.
The table, chairs and furniture should be cleaned on a weekly basis to remove food spills and dirt. A vacuum or sweep and mop of the floor should be done on a weekly basis too to keep it looking and smelling fresh. Dusting is also an important part of cleaning the dining room. Use a long-handled duster to reach the top areas of cabinets, shelving and other furnishings. Remember to check and clean ceiling fans, crown molding and beams regularly.
When you’re finished, stand back and admire your hard work. Give yourself a pat on the back or a little spirited woo-hoo! You’ve just crossed another item off your spring cleaning to-do list! Enjoy your clean and fresh dining room.

As one of Florida's premier tourist destinations, Tampa attracts visitors year-round. Many vacationers opt to stay in Airbnb rentals for that "home away from home" experience, and the demand for top-notch, spotless vacation rentals has never been higher. Whether you’re a vacation rental owner looking to maintain pristine property conditions or a guest preparing for check-in or check-out, understanding the importance of move-in/move-out cleaning can enhance both your experience and the value of your property.
This guide delves into why thorough cleaning is crucial, especially in the context of Airbnb and vacation rentals. Plus, if you’re in Tampa and need a reliable, professional cleaning partner, Poche Services LLC offers affordable, detail-oriented cleaning services to keep your property guest-ready.
Why Move-In/Move-Out Cleaning is Essential for Airbnb and Vacation Rentals
Vacation rental success hinges on two factors: cleanliness and positive guest reviews. Nothing detracts from an Airbnb stay like unclean spaces or remnants from past guests. Move-in/move-out cleaning addresses this need, ensuring your property looks and feels like new for each guest. Here’s why it’s especially critical for short-term rentals:
First Impressions Matter: Cleanliness is often one of the first things guests notice. A well-cleaned space signals professionalism and hospitality, setting the tone for a positive stay.
Guest Health and Safety: Now more than ever, guests expect cleanliness not only for comfort but also for safety. Detailed move-in/move-out cleaning ensures high-touch areas like door handles, light switches, and bathroom fixtures are thoroughly disinfected.
Boosting Guest Satisfaction and Reviews: Clean rentals lead to better guest experiences, which translates into higher reviews. Positive feedback is crucial for Airbnb and vacation rental success, making cleanliness a top priority.
Protecting Property Value: Regular, deep cleaning prevents long-term damage to furniture, flooring, and appliances. Investing in move-in/move-out cleaning is a step toward preserving your property’s value over time.
Reduced Turnover Stress: Turnover days can be hectic for Airbnb hosts, especially if guests are back-to-back. Having a professional cleaning team handle these turnovers efficiently takes the stress off your shoulders.
What’s Included in Move-In/Move-Out Cleaning for Vacation Rentals
Move-in/move-out cleaning is far more comprehensive than a regular clean. This deep cleaning process covers areas that may be overlooked in day-to-day upkeep, ensuring the property is ready for each new guest. Here’s what typically goes into a thorough move-in/move-out cleaning:
Detailed Kitchen Cleaning
Clean and sanitize countertops, sinks, and all appliances (fridge, oven, microwave)
Wipe down cabinets, inside and out, to remove food particles and grease
Degrease stovetops and clean all cooking surfaces to prevent lingering odors
Bathroom Sanitization
Scrub and disinfect showers, bathtubs, sinks, and toilets
Clean and polish mirrors, tiles, and chrome fixtures
Remove mildew or soap scum from tiles, grout, and other surfaces
Bedroom and Living Area Refresh
Vacuum carpets, mop floors, and dust all surfaces, including baseboards
Clean window sills, blinds, and glass doors for a streak-free finish
Dust light fixtures, ceiling fans, and any decor or furniture
Common Area Care
Remove cobwebs and clean high-traffic surfaces
Clean upholstery and ensure all furniture is in presentable condition
Tidy up any outdoor areas, ensuring patios or balconies are guest-ready
High-Touch Surface Disinfection
Sanitize door handles, light switches, remote controls, and other frequently touched surfaces to keep the environment hygienic.
Final Checks
Inspect the property to ensure all cleaning tasks are complete
Ensure fresh towels, linens, and essential supplies are ready for the next guest

This guide will walk you through the steps to achieve a thorough deep clean, along with tips and tricks to make the process easier and more effective.
Why Deep Cleaning is Important
Health Benefits: Dust, allergens, and germs accumulate in neglected areas, potentially leading to health issues. A deep clean helps reduce these hazards, improving indoor air quality.
Extended Lifespan of Home Items: Regular deep cleaning can prolong the life of carpets, furniture, and appliances by removing dirt and grime that can cause wear and tear.
Stress Relief: A clean home contributes to a peaceful mind. A clutter-free and organized space can reduce stress and create a more inviting atmosphere.
Preparation for Special Occasions: Whether it's a holiday gathering or a family reunion, deep cleaning ensures your home is guest-ready.
Essential Deep Cleaning Supplies
Before you begin, gather the following supplies to make the process efficient:
Cleaning Solutions: All-purpose cleaner, disinfectant, glass cleaner, and specific products for carpets and upholstery.
Tools: Microfiber cloths, sponges, scrub brushes, a vacuum cleaner, mop, and buckets.
Protective Gear: Gloves and masks to protect yourself from harsh chemicals and dust.
Step-by-Step Deep Cleaning Process
1. Declutter First
Start by decluttering each room. Remove items that don’t belong, organize belongings, and donate or dispose of what you no longer need. This will make it easier to clean surfaces and will help you maintain an organized space.
2. Dust and Wipe Surfaces
Dust surfaces from top to bottom. Start with ceiling fans, shelves, and light fixtures, then move to furniture and finally baseboards. Use a microfiber cloth or a duster to trap dust effectively.
3. Clean Windows and Mirrors
Use a glass cleaner or a mixture of vinegar and water to clean windows and mirrors, ensuring a streak-free finish. Don’t forget to wipe down window sills and tracks.
4. Deep Clean Floors
Hardwood and Tile: Sweep or vacuum to remove debris, then mop with a suitable cleaner.
Carpets: Vacuum thoroughly, then consider a steam clean or hire a professional for a deep clean if necessary.
5. Focus on the Kitchen
Appliances: Clean the inside and outside of the refrigerator, oven, and microwave.
Cabinets: Wipe down cabinet doors and handles.
Sink: Scrub the sink and faucet, and don’t forget to clean the area under the sink.
6. Bathroom Deep Clean
Toilets: Use a toilet cleaner and brush to scrub the bowl, and disinfect the outside.
Showers and Tubs: Use a powerful cleaner to remove soap scum and mildew.
Vanities and Mirrors: Wipe down all surfaces and restock toiletries.
7. Bedrooms
Bedding: Wash all linens and replace them with fresh ones.
Under the Bed: Dust and vacuum the area under the bed, which often collects dust bunnies.
8. Finishing Touches
After deep cleaning, take a step back and inspect your work. Consider adding fresh air with open windows or air purifiers and add personal touches like fresh flowers or scented candles for a pleasant ambiance.
Tips for Maintaining a Deep Clean
Create a Cleaning Schedule: Regular maintenance cleaning can help prevent deep cleaning from becoming overwhelming.
Involve the Family: Make deep cleaning a family activity by assigning tasks to each member, making it more manageable and even enjoyable.
Set a Timer: Dedicate specific time blocks for each area to keep yourself focused and motivated.
Conclusion
Deep cleaning may seem daunting, but breaking it down into manageable steps can make it a rewarding experience. The health benefits and the satisfaction of a pristine home are well worth the effort. By establishing a routine, you can keep your home looking and feeling its best all year round.

How to Preserve Food in Summer With Modern Techniques
Summer is here, and has brought along with it, fresh new vegetables and fruits for the season. However, summer is also a season when fruits and vegetables tend to go bad easily due to external heat and humidity. Thus, the summer season presents a challenge for us to preserve food items.
However, thankfully, modern techniques have revolutionized food preservation, which has made it easier than ever to enjoy summer flavours year-round.
With this being said, let's explore some simple methods to keep your favourite summer produce fresh and delicious. So, keep reading to find out more.
Top Food Preservation Tips and Techniques for Summer
1) Refrigeration
Refrigeration is your best friend when it comes to preserving perishable foods like berries, leafy greens, and delicate herbs. Simply store them in the refrigerator to slow down the ripening process and extend their shelf life. Remember to keep fruits and vegetables separate, as some emit ethylene gas, which can accelerate ripening in others.
2) Freezing for Longevity
Freezing is a fantastic way to preserve the taste and nutrients of summer produce. Berries, peaches, and sliced vegetables can be frozen on baking sheets before transferring them to airtight containers or freezer bags. Blanching vegetables like peas and green beans before freezing helps retain their colour and texture.
3) Canning
Canning allows you to enjoy the vibrant flavours of summer fruits and vegetables even during the coldest months. Invest in a water bath canner or pressure canner for safety and efficiency. Follow tested recipes and proper canning procedures to ensure food safety. Jams, pickles, and tomato sauce are popular choices for home canning.
4) Dehydration
Dehydrating fruits, vegetables, and herbs removes moisture, preserving them for months. You can use a dehydrator or simply set your oven to a low temperature. Dried fruits make for delicious snacks, while dried herbs add flavour to dishes year-round. Store dried goods in airtight containers in a cool, dark place for the best shelf life.
5) Vacuum Sealing
Vacuum sealing removes air from packaging, preventing oxidation and spoilage. Invest in a vacuum sealer to prolong the freshness of summer produce, meats, and even leftovers. Vacuum-sealed bags or containers can be stored in the refrigerator or freezer, depending on your needs.
6) Fermentation
Fermentation not only preserves food but also enhances its flavour and nutritional value. Pickles, sauerkraut, and kimchi are all delicious examples of fermented foods. Experiment with different vegetables and seasonings to create your own fermented delicacies. Remember to use clean, non-reactive containers and follow safe fermentation practices.
7) Airtight plastic containers
Some dry food items like nuts, seeds, legumes, and even our beloved homemade pickles can be stored in plastic containers. These bpa plastic containers have air tight lids which allow them to lock in moisture, and thus helps to preserve food items. However, you should remember to invest in air tight plastic containers from reputed brands to ensure you get the true value for your money.
Conclusion
With these modern techniques, preserving summer food has never been easier or more rewarding. Whether you prefer the simplicity of refrigeration or the complexity of fermentation, there's a method to suit every taste and preference.
So, stock up on your favourite seasonal produce and get ready to embark on a journey to preserve the taste of summer for months to come.
Happy preserving!
Now, revamp your food preservation game with air-tight plastic containers from Varmora. Designed to lock in the freshness of your food by preventing moisture from coming in contact with the contents, these containers are the perfect solution for summertime food preservation.
